About the event
We hope you'll join us to open our symphonic series with a concert of pieces filled with drama, picturesque imagery, and folk-inspired melodies. Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain is a remarkable symphonic poem and one of his most recognizable pieces. The work, which perfectly portrays a witches' sabbath, is well known from the 1940 Disney film - Fantasia. Dvorak's The Noon Witch is a delightful piece that is based upon a Czech folk poem from the Kytice. The Noon Witch tells of a harried mother, preoccupied with getting lunch ready for the family, and threatening to summon the Noon Witch if her child doesn’t stop misbehaving. Dvorak's dramatic piece is full of imagination combining pastoral tunes and sinister eruptions. Tchaikovsky's 2nd symphony, often called the "Little Russian", is inspired by the folktunes and dance melodies of Ukraine. During Tchaikovsky's day, Ukraine was often called "Little Russia", not to the amusement of any Ukrainians, though. The symphony is thrilling throughout with delicate tunes contrasted by bombastic outbursts. This is a can't miss concert for all!
